Today's New York Times speaks about some bad, possibly dire news - the slump in coal and oil prices may mean that countries that were poised to go on the offensive to clean up their air and water may not do so because of prevailing economic conditions: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/25/world/25climate.html?partner=permalink&exprod=permalink
It is this blog's argument that that would be a grievous mistake. When the prices of coal and oil are down, so are the prices of other commodities. And that is why, this is the right time to focus on clean energy.

The EU certainly has the right approach and it is to be hoped that the new political dispensation in the USA will not waver from its commitment to focus on clean energy. If coal and oil prices have fallen, so, correspondingly, have prices of other commodities that could be used to build more wind turbines, wave power generators and solar photovoltaics, solar thermal power units and solar roofs for homes across the USA. Mr Obama has vowed to spend money on infrastructure - if he looks at the current low prices of metals and of energy that would be needed to manufacture clean energy equipment, he should have a clear direction in which to take his infrastructure spending plans ahead. And if he does this, he would have the USA ready to face the next hike in coal and oil prices which is inevitably going to come at some point in the future.
As a bonus, we would have cleaner air, and, with more wind turbines, more useable water too because wind energy does not require vast amounts of water for cooling. Not really a dire situation if you ask me.
